PIHMS Alumni – Holly Smith

Hospitality is more than a career it’s a journey of people, passion and purpose.

At just 30 years old, Holly Smith is already leading one of the world’s most breathtaking luxury island resorts overseeing a team of 350 in the heart of Fiji.

As Resort Manager at Kokomo Private Island Fiji, Holly is responsible for all front of house and heart of house operations at the internationally renowned barefoot luxury destination. It’s a role that demands leadership, adaptability and an unwavering focus on guest experience qualities she began developing during her time at PIHMS.

And for Holly, hospitality has never been just a job.

“It’s an industry where hard work opens doors, curiosity creates opportunity, and every day brings a chance to make someone’s experience unforgettable.”

Learning by Doing at PIHMS

Holly graduated from PIHMS in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel Management, choosing the school for its immersive, hands-on approach to learning.

“One of the best things about PIHMS was the practical experience learning by doing in real hotel environments and gaining genuine industry exposure that prepared you for the real world.”

That environment gave Holly more than technical skills. It built confidence, resilience and lasting relationships.

“It helped me build real skills, meet inspiring leaders and create friendships that have lasted a lifetime.”

PIHMS also opened her eyes to the scale and diversity of the hospitality industry.

“It wasn’t just about studying it was about discovering what I was capable of. It gave me the confidence to take on new challenges and pursue opportunities in overseas and remote destinations.”

For Holly, those opportunities came quickly.

Chasing the Island Dream

After graduating, Holly began her career as a Food & Beverage Attendant on Hamilton Island before joining the pre-opening team at InterContinental Hayman Island Resort.

It was there she discovered her passion for hotel operations, gaining management experience across both housekeeping and front office.

“Every role taught me something valuable and helped shape the leader I am today.”

That journey eventually led her to Kokomo Private Island Fiji, where she now leads one of the South Pacific’s premier luxury resorts.

“At 30, I’m still living the island dream.”

While luxury hospitality often focuses on unforgettable guest experiences, Holly says the most rewarding part of her role is actually watching her team grow.

“What I did find most fulfilling is mentoring and teaching our local employees, many of whom have never left Fiji or had the opportunity to study further.”

Seeing people gain confidence, develop new skills and build meaningful careers is what motivates her most.

“Watching them grow is incredibly rewarding.”

That sense of care and connection extends directly into the guest experience too.

“I love creating bespoke, authentic guest experiences in a true barefoot luxury setting, infused with the warmth of Fijian culture and spirit.”

At Kokomo, the goal is to make every guest feel deeply connected not just to the property, but to the people and place around them.

“Our property becomes an extension of our guests’ home. I like to say it’s the happiest place on earth.”

Holly believes the future of the hospitality industry is entering an exciting era, particularly as travellers seek more meaningful and personalised experiences.

“I’m excited by the trend toward bespoke guest experiences that focus on authenticity and connection to local culture.”

She’s also passionate about the rise of barefoot luxury and sustainable tourism experiences that feel both exclusive and environmentally conscious.

“Guests are increasingly looking for places that feel like a home away from home, where service is intuitive, heartfelt and deeply connected to the destination.”

For Holly, that evolution reflects what hospitality has always been about at its core: people.

Despite already leading a world-class resort operation, Holly says she still sees hospitality as a constant learning journey. “In hospitality, every day is a school day.” She’s excited to continue growing as a leader, evolving guest experiences and embracing the pace and unpredictability that comes with the industry.

It’s fast-paced, chaotic and a wild ride – but making it look effortless is the best part.”

Her Advice to Future Students

For anyone considering PIHMS or a future in hospitality, Holly’s advice is simple:

“Take every opportunity that comes your way and never be afraid to start at the bottom. Every role teaches you something valuable.”

She credits PIHMS with giving her the ideal foundation combining practical learning with real industry experience in a way that prepares students for the realities of hospitality.

“Be open to learning, work hard and build genuine connections with people.” Because in hospitality, she says, success is driven just as much by attitude as it is by skill. “And your journey will grow as far as your passion takes you.”
