Information to help your application requirements
If you are considering applying to study at PIHMS, this page will help you to prepare for your application requirements
If you’re considering applying for the Bachelor of Applied Hotel Management you will need to provide information about your high school qualification and meet the following requirements:
- University Entrance
- All applicants are interviewed
- Students under 17.5 will be assessed on a case by case basis.
- Overseas students will also require an ESOL minimum of IELTS 6.0 (with no band score lower than 5.5)
If you’re considering applying for the New Zealand Diploma in Hospitality Management you will need to provide information about your high school qualification and meet the following requirements:
- NCEA Level 2
- All applicants are interviewed
- Students under 17.5 will be assessed on a case by case basis.
- Overseas students will also require an ESOL minimum of IELTS 6.0 (with no band score lower than 5.5)
If you’re considering applying for the Postgraduate Diploma in Hotel Management you must provide information about your previous study, work experience.

Applicants are required to hold a Bachelor Degree in business management or a related hospitality area
- Degrees in other disciplines may be considered if the applicant has 2 - 3 years relevant hospitality experience at a supervisory level, or equivalent.
- All applicants are interviewed
- Overseas students will require an ESOL minimum of IELTS 6.5, or equivalent (no band score lower than 6)
- Alternatively, you can demonstrate you meet the English Language requirements by:
- Been awarded a Bachelor’s degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours Degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree with English as the language of instruction from a tertiary education provider from Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States.

If you’re considering applying for the Master of Hotel Management you must provide information about your previous study, work experience.
- Applicants are required to hold a Bachelor Degree in business management or a related hospitality area with at least a B- grade average at level 7 (or higher)
- Degrees in other disciplines may be considered if the applicant has 3 years relevant hospitality experience at a supervisory level, or equivalent.

- Overseas students will require an ESOL minimum of IELTS 6.5, or equivalent (no band score lower than 6)
- Alternatively, you can demonstrate you meet the English Language requirements by:

How to gain University Entrance?
Please refer to the various ways below:
University Entrance is required for admission to this degree at PIHMS
To be awarded University Entrance you will need:
- NCEA Level 3
- You must gain a NCEA level 3 certificate which consists of 80 credits, including at least 60 credits at level 3 or higher. It can include up to 20 credits at level 2.
- 3 University Entrance approved subjects
- You must also gain a total of 42 level 3 credits which are from three University Entrance approved subjects including:
- 14 credits from one University Entrance approved subject
- 14 credits from a second University Entrance approved subject
- 14 credits from a third University Entrance approved subject
- Numeracy credits
- A minimum of 10 level 1 (or higher) numeracy credits, made up from:
- achievement standards – specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or
- unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required).
- Literacy credits
- A minimum of 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:
- 5 credits in reading
- 5 credits in writing
- A minimum of 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:
- A minimum of 10 level 1 (or higher) numeracy credits, made up from:
- You must also gain a total of 42 level 3 credits which are from three University Entrance approved subjects including:
You may be able to gain entrance into PIHMS under special admission if you:
- Don’t have a University Entrance qualification; and
- Are 20 years or over by the first day of semester in which the programme begins
- Additional conditions may apply, at the discretion of PIHMS enrolment team
When an applicant does not qualify for University Entrance, they may be eligible for Discretionary Entrance.
The typical criteria for consideration for Discretionary Entrance are:
- Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident; and
- Don’t have a University Entrance qualification; and
- Are under the age of 20 years
- You have received secondary schooling to at least New Zealand Year 12 level (or its equivalent overseas) and endorsed with merit or better
- You have achieved a minimum of 14 credits in each of four subjects (three of which must be approved subjects)
- You have met the literacy and numeracy standards required for University Entrance, or their equivalents.
Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Types of discretionary entrance:
- Discretionary entrance after completing Year 12
- Discretionary entrance if you have completed the equivalent of Year 13 overseas
- Discretionary entrance after attempting University Entrance
- Discretionary entrance for not attempting to qualify for University Entrance in Year 13
- If you have completed year 13 at a New Zealand secondary school, but not attempted to qualify for university entrance. Ie. the subjects you have taken are not University Entrance subjects.
- CIE (University of Cambridge International Examination)
- IB (International Baccalaureate)
- New Zealand Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) Level 3 Certificate
- Christian Education New Zealand (CENZ) Level 3 Certificate
- An Australian high school ranking with an ATAR rank of 69.6 or above or an OP rank of 14 or below*
- An appropriate qualification, from an overseas secondary school in the final year of study or tertiary institution, deemed by PIHMS to be sufficient for admission into PIHMS Bachelor of Applied Hospitality and Tourism Management*.
*You must also meet the literacy and numeracy standards required for University Entrance or their equivalent
