PIHMS Alumni Spotlight – Tiffany Pukarta

11 November 2024

Introducing Tiffany Pukarta, a PIHMS Degree graduate, now a Front Office Duty Manager for JW Marriott, Auckland.

PIHMS was very memorable

My time at PIHMS was really memorable and impactful. I got to see how things were at PIHMS before, during, and after the pandemic. Even though the pandemic had its challenges, PIHMS was there to support me, especially when it came to finding internship opportunities during those difficult times. The balance of academic and practical training equipped me with theoretical knowledge and the soft skills crucial for the hotel industry. I gained insights and hands-on experience in the different operations of the industry, such as Front Office, Housekeeping, and Food & Beverage. It shaped my approach to the hotel and hospitality industry, giving me the tools and confidence to excel.

PIHMS has strong industry connections and a good reputation, which played an essential role in helping me secure my first role. The internship opportunities gave me the skills and connected me with employers who recognise the quality of PIHMS students.

Front Office was the path I wanted to go down!

I always had been interested in pursuing a career in the Front Office department ever since I did my industry placement at Fable Auckland. Thus, I began my career at JW Marriott Auckland as a Guest Service Agent after graduating, where I further developed a solid understanding of guest interactions and front desk operations. After gaining experience, I was promoted to a supervisory role and am now a Duty Manager. My current responsibilities include overseeing hotel operations, managing guest relations, and ensuring that guest satisfaction is at the highest level.

What drives my passion in this role is the constant opportunity to learn and grow. The hotel industry is dynamic, and every day presents new challenges and learning experiences.

I didn’t expect to enjoy the problem-solving side of my role as much as I do. The job constantly presents unexpected situations, which challenge me to learn and grow. This gives me the desire for continuous improvement and knowledge that keeps me motivated.

It all started with The Venetian in Macau

My passion for the hotel industry began when I visited The Venetian in Macau. I was mesmerized by its beauty and the atmosphere it created. The experience left a lasting impression on me and ever since then I had been intrigued to enter the industry. Additionally, the global nature of the industry appealed to me, offering opportunities to travel and experience different cultures.

My favourite part of the industry is the diversity it offers. No two days are alike since countless unexpected situations can arise, and I’m always meeting new people, both guests and colleagues, from different backgrounds. I truly value the opportunity to interact with and learn from such a diverse group of individuals. Additionally, as I am currently part of Marriott International, the largest hotel company, it allows me to explore a variety of opportunities worldwide.

One aspect that pleasantly surprised me is how close-knit the hotel and hospitality community is. There is a sense of connection among industry professionals, and it’s fascinating how people seem to be connected in some way, even if they don’t know each other directly, regardless of the properties and brands.

Be adaptable, proactive, open to learning, and ready to take on new challenges.

Stepping out of your comfort zone is key; that’s when you’ll learn and grow faster. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Accepting criticism positively will also help you learn from your mistakes and become stronger. Additionally, building strong relationships and connections is equally important.
