PIHMS Alumni Spotlight – Liny Liem

27 November 2024

Introducing Liny Liem, a PIHMS Degree graduate, now a Communications Executive creating content and engaging campaigns for Rosewood Phnom Penh

My time at PIHMS was transformative

Spending three years in an environment so focused on hotel and hospitality immersed me in both the business and art of the industry.

We were not just studying the theory of service but living it every day, learning the nuances that make a guest’s experience unforgettable.

The school’s hands-on approach, especially with its work placements, prepared me for the fast-paced reality of hotel life. It was a strong foundation, not only in hospitality skills but in developing adaptability, resilience, and a service mindset.

PIHMS equipped me with practical skills that went straight from the classroom to real-world applications. Between industry placements and practical coursework, I graduated ready to take on a role confidently. The school’s reputation and network also made it easier to connect with industry professionals, which helped pave the way to my current role.

Diving into the world of communication

After graduating, I initially focused on gaining experience in communications and hospitality, eventually joining Rosewood Phnom Penh as a Communications Executive. In my role, I handle everything from social media strategy to guest engagement initiatives, ensuring that our brand voice is clear, genuine, and captivating. I also work on content creation and collaborate on campaigns that showcase the unique experiences we offer.

Being in communications within such a dynamic hotel means every day is different, and that’s something I love. I get to be a storyteller, bringing out the character and richness of the Rosewood experience. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see our guests connect with the narratives and experiences we create.

I didn’t anticipate how fulfilling it would be to work so closely with our team across departments. Whether it’s coordinating with the culinary team or working alongside the events staff, the collaboration adds depth to my role and broadens my understanding of the hotel experience.

The industry felt like the perfect place for me

I’ve always been drawn to the idea of making people feel special and creating memorable experiences, and the hotel and hospitality industry felt like the perfect place to do that. There’s a unique joy in seeing someone’s eyes light up because of something we’ve done to exceed their expectations.

The diversity and energy in the hotel and hospitality industry keeps it exciting. I love that no two days are ever the same. We get to meet people from all over the world, each with their stories, and we get to play a small part in their journey.

The level of creativity surprised me. The Hotel and Hospitality industry isn’t just about operations; it’s about crafting experiences that resonate with people. Whether it’s a beautifully presented dish or a meaningful guest interaction, there’s an art to what we do.

It starts with the basics.

tay curious and be willing to start from the basics—it’s the best way to learn. Be adaptable and ready to take on any task with a positive attitude. Lastly, remember that the industry is about genuine connections; focus on the people, and everything else will fall into place.
