For international students like Michael Yohansha, PIHMS is the ideal place to launch a successful career in the growing global tourism and hospitality industry.
The lessons the 2016 graduate learnt in PIHMS’ simulated learning environment, the rich professional networks he developed during his study, and the New Zealand work experience he gained via paid industry placements, have all helped Michael build a thriving career in one of the world’s most dynamic industries.
Most recently, Michael’s performed a career pivot, moving from SkyCity for the opportunity to learn about revenue management at Accor Hotels in Auckland.
“I’m passionate about this industry. I enjoy seeing different sides of hospitality, learning new things, and meeting people from all over. There’s so much happening – more hotels being developed, the new convention centre opening, and tourism picking up again. It’ll be interesting to see how everything plays out,” he says.
International students like Michael have been training at PIHMS since its doors opened almost 30 years ago. Choosing a school is a big decision for every student, but when home is a 15,000 km round trip away, getting it right is even more important.
Before enrolling in PIHMS’ Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management, Michael made sure he did his homework, investigating the academic, practical, and pastoral support on offer.
“I chose PIHMS because of the way it blends theory and real-life experience. As someone new to New Zealand, I knew that hands-on learning would make a huge difference. And it did. By the time I was ready to step into the workforce I already had a good idea of what was expected and experience doing it.”
“When you move to a new country there’s only so much you can learn from books. Living and working at PIHMS while I studied was like taking a crash course in Kiwi,” he laughs.
Michael says living, working, and studying with other students in PIHMS’ simulated hotel environment helped him do more than decode Kiwi slang and customs.
“One of the best things for me was working and living with other students. You meet so many people from different backgrounds and cultures. It was easy to make friends, build confidence, and feel at home.
“Many of the connections I made at PIHMS and during my paid placements also became valuable in my professional life later on.”
Today, Michael is enjoying his new role specialising in revenue management, but he’s open to what the future could bring.
“This industry is full of opportunities. It’s always evolving, and there’s so much room to grow, both professionally and personally. Every day is different.”
And his advice for anyone at the beginning of their journey?
“Enjoy the moment and trust the process. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – that’s part of learning. If you’re passionate about the industry, the rest will come.”
